-how to make a gif

Hi! This is gonna be a bit long. If there’s anyone who’s interested in GIF-making, you can read this as a reference:))

To start with, you’ll need some tools. I use Photoshop as I’m used to it, but you can also use things like GIMP and Ulead GIF Animator.

You can download different versions of Photoshops »HERE«. Although I use CS6 (the newest version), 4 and 5 are good too. Just follow the instructions after clicking into the download links.

(Portable version means you don’t have to go through the trouble of installation)

Open your Photoshop, and you’ll see something like this (coloring may be different):

image

Make sure you have the timeline thingy at the bottom, layers thingy on the right, the history thingy and properties thingy as well (these two are optional). If you don’t have it, check the following boxes under ‘Window’ at the top:

image

Now you’re ready! Have a video clip ready, then click Import > Video Frames to Layers under the Files menu:

image

After choosing your vid, you have to choose which part to GIF:

image

*The limit to every ? frames are optional. If you want a smoother GIF, you can leave it unchecked, but you have to sacrifice the length of vid used in your GIF. Vice versa.

After opening the file, delete unnecessary frames in the timeline thingy at the bottom:

image

Then select all of the frames by clicking the first frame, holding the shift key and clicking the last frame. Press the little arrow at the bottom of one of the frames and change the time delay.

image

Select ‘Other…’ if there’s no choice of yours on the list and type your settings.

Frame delay references:

-no limit to every ? frames: 0.06 - 0.08 sec

-limit to every 2 frames: 0.08 - 0.1 sec

For the rest, you do the math;)

You’ll then have to resize your image. The width of one photo a line for a photoset is 500px, 245px each for two and 160px for three. I’m gonna do the 245px one.

For me, I’ll resize it first using ‘Image Size’ under the image menu. I’ll just shrink it a little bit ‘cause I want to focus on KJK and HH.

image

After the first step of resizing, you may need to further resize it to suit tumblr. Press the Rectangular Marquee Tool on the left toolbox and fix the marquee size as width 245px and height as-you-like-but-i-prefer-160px-to-180px. After clicking and dragging the marquee on your image and finding a good position. Press ‘Crop’ under the Image menu.

(Right click and deselect the marquee if you feel compelled)

Ta-da! A basic GIF is done!!:

image

If you wanna know how to beautify and sharpen your GIF, continue reading. If you don’t, skip to the last part to see how to save a GIF.

Now, group your layers by creating a new group, shift-selecting all the layers and drag it into the group.

image

image

You might wanna close the group by clicking the small triangle. Saves space.

Add a psd. Psds are default Photoshop unit. It may contain various layers to brighten up your GIF or color it. I’m gonna use »THIS« one as it’s handy.

Open the file in Photoshop and duplicate the top group in the Layers section (which contains the adjustment layers). You can do that by right clicking the entire group and press ‘Duplicate Group…’. The destination is your GIF.

image

image

Now your entire adjustment layers group should be on top of your original GIF group. This is the result:

image

Now to the sharpening part. Select the first frame in the timeline thingy at the bottom and press the ‘Convert to Video Timeline’ icon:

image

Select your GIF group, then go to Filter > Convert for Smart Filters:

image

Now I’ll give you the simple version of sharpening. My version’s a bit complicated and maybe I’ll give you the settings another time when you master GIF making:)

Go to Filter again, this time ‘Sharpen > Sharpen:

image

Your refined GIF is finished! Now to the LAST part.

Go to File > Save for Web… and go with these settings:

image

…or you could press the button on the right of Preset, select ‘Optimize to File Size…’ and set it as follows:

image

Then press Save… and save it at a location and rename the file as you like. Then you are done!!!

Complicated sharpening version:

I think I’ve gotten too deep:P anyways if you’re familiar with GIF-making it shouldn’t take you long to make one. Ten or less minutes I guess.
